What are we fundraising for?

We are raising funds to build a functional set of curtains that open and close.  With this capability we can create unlimited scene changes behind the curtains while the audience continues to be entertained in front of the curtain.

Because we perform in a heritage building that cannot have equipment attached to existing structures we must create our own freestanding and portable truss structure that we can move in and out.  This structure will support the fire retardant draperies we must acquire but will also provide structure for us to do plenty of other scenery tricks that you will just have to come and see!

Additional benefits to a freestanding solution is that we can perform in alternative venues (e.g. outdoor theatre) and like our theatre lights, make the equipment available to other non-profit community groups who could use them.

1. Why now?
With a 75% return rate we are thrilled to keep challenging our kids.  We want to endeavor more creative staging so we can stimulate new creativity.  Our previous lights acquisition is a perfect example of how we have raised the bar on what we try to do.

2. Why not rent?
A thorough search of sound and lighting rental facilities has revealed the kind of trussing they rent is not appropriate for our needs because they are heavy duty scaffolding solutions used for large-scale festivals and productions.  The material we have sourced from Versatruss is appropriate but is not available for rent.  We have considered a home-made solution but the cost-savings did not outweigh the safety considerations, durability and resalability of a turnkey solution.

3. Why not use a space that has curtains?
The reasons are cost and acoustics.  Local gymnasiums and community centers have lousy acoustics and they cost too much to rent.  Councillor Doug Thompson has championed our cause in the past and availed the Town Hall.  We are now paying rent but not at the levels alternative facilities would demand.  And we love our space!
